To-Dos Before Touring a College Campus
Before you begin your tour, there are a few factors to consider. Assessing these can make your experience touring a campus as seamless and informative as possible.
Research the school ahead of time to get a feel for what student life and the campus itself are like.
Think about your major and/or area of interest and research the different programs the college offers. Outline a list of questions you’d like answered during your tour: What is the program like? What resources are offered to students?
Plan your tour. Of course, there will be a set schedule for the actual tour, plan to arrive a little early. If you can, carve out time before or after your scheduled tour to explore the campus independently.
Be sure that you’re registered (if needed). Most guided campus tours will require students to register online in advance, be sure to check the school’s admissions website, or contact their admissions office, to confirm that you’ve completed all necessary steps.
To-Dos During Your Campus Tour
Once you are on campus, the fun will begin. Some schools will offer coffee and other refreshments before or during the tour. Be sure you have any questions you’d like answered noted either in your phone or in a notebook. There can be a lot going on at once, but make a point to jot down any answers you get to these questions.
Also during your tour, be sure to:
- Learn about campus life and extracurricular activities. Often, tours are hosted by students themselves. Listen to what these students have to say about campus life. Does the school seem to prioritize diversity and inclusion? How accessible are student amenities? This can give you a good idea of what a school’s overall culture is like.
- Remember to take notes — and photos. Note down any answers you get to various questions you’ve had. It’s also a great idea to take photos of the campus, along with any unique amenities they may offer.
- Learn about any clubs there are at the school. These could be academic clubs pertaining to your major, or even social clubs intended to build relationships.
- If you’re interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, be sure to check out their Greek life options. These may be covered when discussing the different clubs and extracurriculars.
- Review classrooms and study spaces. Nearly every campus tour will give you a glimpse into these environments. When exploring these different study spaces, be sure to also consider their accessibility, how late these spaces are open to students, and if their size is conducive to what your needs are.
- Pay attention to any labs, studios, and other facilities offered. This is especially important if your major will involve hours in a lab, technical facility, art studios, etc. In addition, consider facilities like dining halls, food courts, sporting venues, student gyms, outdoor hang out areas, etc.
- Get an understanding of what resources are offered. This can include counseling areas, career placement services, financial aid departments, along with scholarship opportunities. Does the school offer what you’ll need for success both academically and personally? It’s always a good sign if a school offers internships or other career services.
- Consider transportation and parking. Depending on the size of the campus, there may be buses or other means of transportation. Some students may simply drive across campus. If you will have a car, try to get an understanding of parking structures and different lots that will be available to you.
Before You Leave
If you have the opportunity before leaving, take time to walk around the rest of the campus; explore different common areas, or grab some food in one of the dining halls. You may also want to get a feel for the surrounding area outside of the school. Is it a city with many shopping areas? An open space with picturesque hiking trails? Somewhere in between?
Most importantly, remember to make the most out of the experience. Take photos with friends, or on your own. Whether you choose the school or not, know that campus tours mark exciting new beginnings for students from all walks of life. Be sure to make the most of yours.
