Specific requirements can vary depending on the school you’re applying to and the type of institution it is. Although there are times when the college application process can be stressful, it’s important to note that it doesn’t need to be. Here’s a general overview of what you’ll need to include in a standard college application.
High School Diploma or GED
Most colleges, universities, and trade or vocational schools will require applicants to have completed high school and received a diploma, or to have earned a GED. Having either a diploma or a GED demonstrates that students have received the educational foundation needed to take the next step in their educational endeavors.
Grade Point Average (GPA) and Standardized Test Scores
Some very selective schools may require a GPA of at least a 3.7 or higher. Whereas other schools have more lenient GPA requirements. Many institutions will also consider the difficulty of the courses a student takes when looking at grade point average using your high school transcript.
In addition to GPA, colleges will require standardized test scores. Similar to a student’s GPA, more selective colleges may have a minimum score they accept, whereas other schools may not place as great of an emphasis on test scores.
Personal Statements
In addition to academic performance, schools will require students to submit a personal essay or statement. Some schools may give students a specific prompt, whereas others could have more open-ended ones. Be sure to read their requirements carefully to ensure you do not omit any needed information.
Personal statements also give students the opportunity to showcase their skills, their interests, what makes them unique, and any formative life experiences and lessons that have shaped their pursuit for schooling. These essays present an opportunity to build oneself up, so be sure to take advantage of it. You may feel that you’re bragging about yourself, however, now is one of the rare opportunities when doing so is okay.
Extracurriculars and Volunteer Work
Colleges will also consider extracurricular activities and will often request students list them. This might include work or volunteer work, any sports they’re involved in, or coaching/junior coaching opportunities. When listing these extracurriculars, if given the opportunity to, students should describe the ways in which these interests have shaped them, any positive impacts they’ve been able to make in their community, and any lessons they’ve learned.
Letters of Recommendation
Most colleges will require at least two or more letters of recommendation. These could be from teachers, counselors, mentors, coaches, etc. Some schools may restrict relatives from writing these letters for students. A student should be sure to request any needed letters of recommendation early to give people enough time to write strong letters on their behalf.
The Application Form
One of the more obvious mentions is the application form itself. Be sure to answer all required fields and attach all necessary documents before submitting your application. Students should read carefully and know that, while many applications follow a similar format, there could be different requirements listed. Always double check and proofread.
